Annie Wright School Reviews

My son has been attending Annie Wright for the last 8 years. It is time to move on as he completes his 8th Grade this year. We, including our son, will have to adjust not attending the school anymore. The school has excellent middle school academics esp 5th-8th grade. My son has learned alot and has excelled in a number of nationalised testing -ACT, CTY, ERBs etc. I am particularly impressed by the dedication of the staff towards the kids. Alot of personal attention is paid to them. Looking back, I think we took the right decision in sending him to Annie Wright.

The programs are great there, and the teachers are very nice. I went to one of there summer programs are they're fab!

Our oldest daughter attended AWS for 13 years and youngest is in her 11th year. The oldest daughter just graduated from UPS and felt well prepared for her college experience. Many of her fellow college students were not as prepared especially in the area of writing. She also found her computer skills far superior to most of her peers. She was a nationally-ranked junior tennis player while at AWS and the school was very accomodating to her special scheduling needs, recognizing her athletic talent. The school has wonderful music, art, language and athletic programs. We also are tuition-paying parents, but unlike the other reviewer, we are pleased AWS attempts to mirror society with it's student population, and does not have an elitist attitude, for children must learn to live and learn in the real world, with all types of people and even our children are not perfect.

We have two sons attending Annie Wright School and there is no place they would rather be. They feel AWS is their second home. The extra-curricular programs are outstanding, and the options for athletics, arts, and music instruction in Lower School cannot be matched by any other school in the area. We have shopped around. When you walk into the beautiful facilty, the feeling is one of tradition, acceptance and respect for all. It just feels right. AWS offers an excellent college prep curriculum like other schools of its caliber, but the swim classes, athletics, extra-curriciular offerings, and particularly the emphasis on global education set AWS apart from the rest.

We sent our daughter to Annie Wright for 5 long years. We were one of the few to pay the full price tuition. What we found is that Annie Wright will accept any student at any level if their parents can afford the tuition. Yes your child has to take an entrance exam I can assure you it is all pomp and circumstance. The administration makes no apology for accepting students with behavior or learning issues. It's all about who can pay. Our child was consistently board in class because the rate of learning was so slow to accommodate for the children that couldn't keep up. They spent a entire year on multiplication and division. The next year was spent working only on fractions. This is something our daughter was able to learn quickly and was not allowed to progress. Don't waste your money here.

My daughter is now a kindergartner at the Annie Wright School, a place where I see children given the chance to grow and shine academically, artistically, and athletically. Student expression flourishes here. While my daughter s class possesses a wide variety of abilities, I see all the students receiving great instruction, especially in reading. The Lower School uses the Junior Great Books program which builds deep understanding using rich literature. I don t know any other school in Tacoma that can match this. The art program is phenomenal; just walk the halls and view the student art work plastering the walls. Without a doubt every day is an engaging and challenging day for my daughter. Great teachers inspire her every day. Knowing this and seeing her blossom over the last two years makes paying the tuition a joy. This school is a phenomenal opportunity for children.

We have had a child at the school for the last seven years and have been very pleased. The teachers have been overwhelmingly kind and the focus on a global education, covering art, science, music and other enrichment areas, cannot be beat. We have found the families to be generally friendly and really like the peer group our daughter has. We are especially excited to have the opportunity for a small middle school experience with a known group of peers.

The decision to keep our daughter at AWS or not has been excruciating. I have been an insider at the school for a year now, and although I am completely happy with the particular class she is in right now, the rest of it is frankly dismal. As a teacher myself with wide experience, I can say that the academics are not up to par with a school of this tuition range. There is no integrated curriculum and teaching methods are typically pretty old-fashioned - of the question-answer variety. Student behavior is generally unfocused and rather disrespectful considering what is supposedly the caliber of this school. I am saddened by this school as my daughter can get much of what she gets here for free elsewhere, if we don't let the fancy AWS name blind us.

Take this from a student I have been going here for over 8 years and enjoying almost every moment of it, yes the quality over the past couple years has gone down in extracurricular activities and in a few other areas but the education is better than ever in fact on Saturday I was legible to take the SAT's and I feel that I did pretty good, the athletic programs are also better than ever if we win our basketball game tomorrow than we will have won our second championship and if your worried about your child not having a social life don't I have over 50 friends!

My daughter attends the AWS Upper School. Without question, this is the strongest education offered in the city of Tacoma. The personal attention, class rigor, and college preparation is second to none. I recommend this school whole-heartedly to anyone with a high school age daughter.

My son attended AWS for the 5th grade and it was less than we had hoped. There seems to be a subtle girl bias at the school. Some teachers seem to be harder on the boys behaviorally than the girls. The academics leave something to be desired and the parent conferences and the progress reports are a joke. There was no specifity for the individual student and with the swimming instructor, we left the conference convinced that she had no idea who our son was.

I transferred my child to Annie Wright from Charles Wright and have been very pleased with our decision. They offer extra-curricular activities which makes it a well-rounded education plan. They teach computer at a very early age where it is a must this day and age. They even have swimming class where Annie Wright is the only one who offers it in Tacoma. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who would like to have a quality education for their child/ren

Annie Wright is an excellent school if you want your child to succeed. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the class sizes are small enough that you know your child will get the 1 on 1 attention they need. Excellent extra curricular activites, strong athletics department, challenging academics and sincere parent involvement. Boarding is available for high school students. Beautiful large 10 acre campus in a safe area of Tacoma. A wonderful school to check out.

Annie Wright School is the premium, school of choice in the Pacific Northwest. Parents are incredibly committed, involved, dedicated, and supportive. The academic programs are top flight. The students learn and enjoy life. The school has a small student body (girls only for high school) and, it appears, that most students and faculty know everyone. Our daughter has attended AWS for the past two years. It is worth every penny and more. Our daughter has excelled in a rigorous academic program that helps each student recognize their potential.

To start, I love Annie Wright. We have great teachers, fun classes, and a good setting. Small class size allows for better interaction between the students and the teachers, and most students have an individual relationship with each teacher. We have a good music and art program. Music and art classes are both offered, as well as private lessons.

the school has a great student/teacher ratio but extras add up. For the price the addtional student help should be better. Families can be clickish.

This has been a great school for our child. It provides a caring, supportive and challenging environment where she is thriving. Even with financial aid, financing her education is hard, but well worth it! The teachers seem very invested in the kids and are excellent educators! We love it!

Dr. Ghosh is a great leader I am certain that she will be able to move the school forward. My daughter has been a student there since Kindergarten. Overall I think the many changes implemented over the past 3 years by Dr. Ghosh have greatly enhanced the academics. AWS has some great teachers and some teachers who should really consider retirement as they clearly do not enjoy their work and are punitive and bullying in their attitude toward students. I would agree that the parents are snobs, racist, newly rich social climbers. However, my focus is not for me to make friends but for my child to receive the best education possible. The atmosphere at AWS could stand improvement that begins with the staff and muct include teachers, parents and their children. However, I have been very impressed with the academics and feel certain that my child will continue to excell.

Our child has been at AWS for 2 years now and we are very pleased. The AWS Middle School has helped our child excel academically because of a talented and invested group of teachers and staff. We specifically chose AWS for it's small class size and individual attention and we have not been disappointed. Her first semester was a bit difficult socially, but by the end of her first year she felt a welcome part of the community. It seemed even more challenging because most of her peers have been together since kindergarten. It does seem that AWS could find more ways for new families (especially in the MS and US) to connect but our experiance as a new family overall was positive. We are absoluty thrilled that our daughter is at AWS and highly reccomend it to others!

My daughter began attending AWS in middle school and is now in upper school there. We live a long way from the school but the extra travel is worth it. The AWS community of faculty, staff and parents is warm and welcoming. Our daughter is getting a high quality, well rounded education that is helping her to mature both intellectually and socially. The attention the teachers are able and willing to give each student has been a great aid in helping our daughter improve her study skills and in developing a sense of curiousity that is so important in getting a real education. This is a school that is not afraid to question itself and explore different ways of doing things. The leadership is focused on developing well educated citizens of the world community. We know that our daughter will leave here with an excellent start in university.

After searching to find a high quality education for our daughter we deceided on AWS. With the cost of the tuition, the facility, and teacher enthusiasm we saw on our visits we were sure that we we going to get our moneys worth. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have had to enroll our daughter in an after school math program due to poor program at this school. The atmosphere is one of snobbishness by the parents which is passed to the children....please this is Tacoma. The new headmaster seems to be more interested in building the facility, money drives, and her world vision of making our children good citizens of the earth than what we paid for. A great education that leads to college. If you aspire to raise mediocre students at exorbitant cost, but with quick admission to the Tacoma Tennis Club AWS is for you.
