Churchmouse Yarns and Teas: Knitting on Bainbridge

On Bainbridge Island, Church Mouse Yarns and Teas supplies its customers with all their knitting needs – and tea as well. Filled with the hubbub of knitters browsing as well as learning how to use the materials the shop supplies, Church Mouse Yarns and Teas provides a wealth of well-organized yarns, knitting supplies and patterns showcasing its wares.

Easily reached from Seattle via the Bainbridge ferry, the shop is off Winslow Way near the Blackbird bakery. Clean, airy, and immaculately arranged, it's an entrancing place for fabric lovers to browse.

While plenty of luxurious and pricey yarns fill the shop, there's a good selection of more moderately priced skeins as well. Hand-dyed local wools are one of the shop's specialties, making it a good place to celebrate local crafts. A wide range of wooden knitting needles stands out, as does its selection of needlepoint supplies. The wealth of specialties makes the store a haven for knitters looking for yarns and patterns that are hard to find elsewhere. Alpaca, silk, and merino wools appear on the shelves as do the sometimes-hard-to-find Socks That Rock yarns from Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Check the Church Mouse website to find downloadable patterns, such as its welted fingerless gloves or Turkish bed socks, or pick up a kit which includes both pattern and yarns, delivered with Church Mouse's characteristic attention to detail, in its signature linen project bag.

Store personnel are ready to chat about the store's stock or supply suggestions for a project. Plenty of displays showcase the uses that yarns can be turned to. Frequent classes, taught by local as well as visiting knitters, are furnished by the store.

Those exhausted from shopping for yarn may want to dip into the store's other specialty: teas. A wealth of high-end British teas, including PG Tips and Yorkshire Gold, provides a civilized touch, allowing shoppers to buy something to enjoy at home while plying their needles.

HelloSeattle Tip: Pick up one of the free shop patterns to discover new ways to use some of the Church Mouse yarns.
