The family moved here from Italy in 1989 and have since been running the joint with the same attention and grace as you would do in your own home. A piano player sings Italian tunes and takes requests on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Whether you are looking for a family gathering, a romantic dinner, a birthday celebration or just entertaining friends or coworkers, Mamma Melina will surpass your expectations. The Varchetta family promises good service, great food, great atmosphere and fair prices ($9 to $16 on average for food, and wines start at $17). Buon appetito e grazie. Reservations Recommended.

Tips

  • Know Before You Go
Around the corner from the Seven Gables Theatre, Mamma Melina's draws moviegoers before and after shows.
  • The Extras
Enjoy live piano music on Tuesday nights and Friday through Sunday. Requests are often honored.
  • Parking
Finding a spot in the U-District can be tricky, especially with two movie theaters within walking distance. Make sure to read all street signs to avoid a ticket. North of 50th Street is a good bet.

Perfection on the plate

Took my niece here on a quiet Sunday night and experienced food that was executed flawlessly. Portion size was just right. Seasoning and flavor profiles where impeccable. Our server was competent and courteous and offered helpful recommendations. On a quiet evening it was altogether pleasant, but it's a wide open room so I could see that if the place was packed it would be very noisy. I would go back and I highly recommend the scampi. Prawns were cooked perfectly!

Pros: Food was executed beautifully

Cons: Ambiance is just okay

You must go on a Tuesday night for the piano player. Be sure to sit close and the piano sound is beautiful. The food was wonderful. Homemade Bread for dipping and OMG, you have to try the bread pudding! We will go back. Even the server was fantastic!!

Pros: Ambiance and great food

Cons: Parking

The food was pretty decent, AMAZING tiramisu. I loved the live music, but given the space is so small people were talking so loud you could barely hear the amazing voice of the gentleman singing. We celebrated a birthday there, a guy sang happy birthday in Italian while playing an accordian, very nice!

Pros: Live Music

Cons: Loud conversations
