Piroshky Piroshky pastries: so nice, you'll order them twice

Published: May 10, 2009

Piroshky Piroshky may be the smallest restaurant in town. It's basically a take-out counter and a self-service refrigerator and is scarcely large enough to hold more than five people at  time.

But while the restaurant lacks in size, the savory Russian pastries that this Pike Place Market staple bakes up are sizable — and they're satisfying meals all in themselves.

Named in part from the Russian word pir — meaning "feast" — piroshky are pies filled with hearty comfort dishes, and Piroshky Piroshsky does them right. Inside a shell of chewy, very lightly sweetened dough, you can get your choice of smoked salmon paté; chicken, mushroom and rice; potato, onion and cheese; smoked mozzarella, broccoli and mushroom, and a couple dozen other delicious combinations. They offer piroshky filled with meats, vegetables and even fruit and marzipan, and there's not a bad one in the bunch.

Strongly recommended are the basic beef and cheese — Piroshky Piroshky's take on the cheeseburger, and a hundredfold better than most — and the potato, onion and cheese piroshky, which is just filling enough to satisfy your lunch cravings without making you feel stuffed. Afterward, split a chocolate cream hazelnut roll with a friend, and you're covered through dinnertime.

When the weather is fair, it's a good idea to take your piroshky to nearby Victor Steinbrueck Park, where there's a nice sunny patch of grass and a terrific view of Puget Sound. But even on inclement days, Piroshky Piroshky's treats evoke comfort and warmth, created as they were in a country that still needs hearty meals to beat back long winters.
