Honey Hole's sandwiches are the bee's knees

Published: May 3, 2009

Don't be fooled by the irreverent décor of this Capitol Hill sandwich shop. There may be kitschy art hanging on its walls and a giant, cartoon pirahna suspended from the ceiling, but inside its kitchen, the Honey Hole is all business. Quite frankly, they serve up some of the best sandwiches you'll find in Seattle.

You can order nearly anything off the menu and be satisfied. Meat lovers favor the Buford T. Justice, a pulled-pork sandwich slathered with pineapple barbecue sauce and topped with melted provolone; The Gooch, with its roast beef, red onions and cheddar cheese served with au jus on the side; and the amazing Liotta, stacked high with honey-roasted ham, genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone, peppers, red onions and lettuce.

Vegetarians fall in numbers for the Big Smooth, with its marinated tempeh, avocado, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, and feta cheese spread; and they can't get enough of the Dirt Burger, a nutty and vegetable-packed meatless patty. And Honey Hole's house-made fries or coleslaw make perfect sides.

At dinnertime, the menu expands to include some tasty burgers — the Western Sky Burger, with its bacon, sharp cheddar and onion rings, is strongly recommended — as well as a small selection of personal pizzas and a marinated artichoke dip that's worth crossing town for. Beginning at happy hour, they even add a specialty cocktail menu that strongly favors fresh juices.

But at its sweet heart, Honey Hole is all about the things that can be done between two pieces of bread — and they're some fairly wonderful things indeed.
