Sinners & Saints helps to keep Fremont peculiar
A neighborhood as peculiar as Fremont demands a restaurant that differs from the usual watering hole, and Sinners & Saints is certainly delivers. This laid-back tapas-and-tequila joint is a perfect fit for a neighborhood that boasts a statue of Lenin, a bridge troll, and a summer parade of naked bicyclists. Four words: Goldfish races. Every Tuesday.
Yes, you read that correctly. On Tuesday evenings, two water-filled troughs are lined up side-by-side. Upon paying your $5 entry fee, you're asked to pick a potential winner out of the fish tank, and then you're off to the races. You goose your fish along with gentle shots from a squirt gun. The winner takes all, especially the bragging rights associated with participating in what just might be the single weirdest sporting event ever held.
You could also come to Sinners & Saints for its vast selection of top-shelf sipping tequilas and sandwiches, appetizers, and pastas, which are modestly-priced and pretty darned good. The kitchen turns out one spicy delight after another: slow-roasted tamarind pork sandwiches topped with grilled red onions and pickled jalapeno pepper slices; baked three-cheese macaroni with chorizo sausage; house-made black olive tapenade served on crostini spread with green pesto; and chicharrones: salty fried pork skins served with salsa. Surprise specials show up at the kitchen's whim.
The dining room and bar are every bit as tasty to the eyes as la comida. Dia de Los Muertos-style artwork hangs on the walls and above the bar — be sure to get a look at the gold-plated skeleton that is just above the fish tank. Even the bathrooms have an artistic bent: each one has a chalkboard, on which patrons can draw pictures, make confessions or simply express their love for Sinners & Saints. (Mostly the latter.)
