Garage is where the good times roll

Published: Apr 21, 2009

Whether your game is bowling or billiards, Garage has what you want — and lots of it. This sprawling venue — formerly a Plymouth dealership and repair garage, circa 1928 — is home to 14 bowling lanes and 18 regulation-size billiard tables, plus a great restaurant and bar.

Simply being at Garage is a pleasure. With its high, exposed-beam ceilings, mid-century modern furnishings and genuinely sophisticated vibe, Garage is one of the classiest joints in which you'll ever roll a turkey or sink an eightball.

This is no dank, smoky pool hall or noisy bowling center; it is immaculately clean, beautifully lit (who ever heard of a bowling alley with skylights?), has food that shames the greasy nachos you get at other bowling alleys (the smoked salmon dip is recommended), and boasts a wine list of more than 75 bottles.

The crowd is equal parts upscale urban and pure Seattle eccentric — look for mohawked hipsters bowling alongside three-piece suits — and the venue has a few prime spots that are actually quiet enough for that mixed crowd to sit down and engage in civilized conversation.

Garage's bowling lane and billiard table rental prices vary depending on the time of day or week — lanes range from $10 to $25 an hour, tables from $5 to $14 —  which is why the more adventuresome of Seattle's party crowd saves its energy until Garage's late-night Happy Hour.

From 10 p.m. through closing Sunday through Thursday, both tables and lanes are $5 an hour, and the crowds are manageable (one of Garage's only liabilities is its enormous popularity, resulting in long wait times for lanes and tables).

Visit Garage after dinner one weeknight and you'll understand why so many Seattleites spend so much time parked inside.
